The Start of Yamaha Powersports

The Yamaha Corporation was launched in 1887 by Torakusu Yamaha. At the beginning, the company focused on creating pianos and organs. Their logo is a circle of three interlocked tuning forks, which is a tool used to help tune pianos. They saw great success with their musical instrument offerings.

 

The post-war years saw many Japanese companies working to diversify their product offering. It was a strategy to both help compensate for lost time and repurpose war-time machines. The company's president, Genichi Kawakami, decided that the company would focus on making small engines for motorcycles.

 

In 1955, the Yamaha Motor Company broke off from the larger corporation and enjoyed great success with its two-stroke engine motorcycles. In 1968, four-stroke Yamaha motorsports engines were unveiled.
